The 2024 Tekne Awards: Celebrating Minnesota’s Best in Tech

More than 500 attendees gathered to celebrate the success happening in Minnesota’s tech landscape. Concord, proud to be a Bronze sponsor of the event, joined in the celebration. Here’s a look at the highlights from the night.

On Thursday, November 14, Minnesota’s tech community came together for the 26th annual Tekne Awards, hosted by the Minnesota Technology Association. With over 500 attendees, this event celebrated innovation, excellence, and the talent shaping Minnesota’s technology landscape.

Recognizing Excellence in Innovation

The Tekne Awards honor individuals, organizations, and initiatives across three key categories: Business Impact, Community Impact, and Individual Achievement. This year, 15 awards were presented, each showcasing outstanding contributions that strengthen Minnesota’s tech ecosystem.

“Each year, it’s a privilege to gather together all of the Minnesota-based organizations and individuals that are driving innovation across our state’s technology landscape,” said Jeff Tollefson, President and CEO of MnTech. “Our winners this year highlight the very best of what makes Minnesota’s tech industry great, ranging from Fortune 100 companies to non-profits to individuals.”

The winners were selected by a panel of peer judges who are experts in their respective fields. Here are winners from this year’s event:

  • Advancements in Artificial Intelligence: Seagate implemented an AI-driven image analysis system to improve quality control, defect detection, and tool monitoring across its wafer production. The project has delivered $30 million in value and is being scaled globally.
  • Advancements in Data Security & Privacy: Minnesota IT Services launched a statewide cybersecurity plan with $3.5 million in funding to enhance local government defenses and partner with counties, cities, and schools to improve cyber resiliency.
  • Outstanding Achievements in Data Analytics: Minnesota Twins use biomechanical data to evaluate player performance and gain deeper insights into pitching and hitting mechanics.
  • Excellence in Customer/User Experience: HealthPartners introduced an online scheduling system with real-time visibility of appointment availability, improving convenience and care access.
  • Outstanding Achievements in Market Innovation: Niron Magnetics developed the world’s first rare earth-free permanent magnet, addressing environmental concerns and future shortages in industries like electric vehicles and wind energy.
  • Excellence in Partnership: Sleep Number & Mayo Clinic collaborated on research connecting sleep abnormalities to heart failure, leveraging data from smart beds to improve heart health outcomes.
  • Tech for Good: REM5 Studios created a VR project supporting global polio eradication, raising awareness and engagement through immersive storytelling.
  • Tech Talent Development: Minnetronix Medical addressed labor shortages by implementing creative recruitment strategies and fostering talent through educational partnerships and internship programs.
  • Building Our Tech Future: CSforAll-MN advocates for equitable computer science education in Minnesota, influencing policies and expanding access statewide.
  • Exceptional Technology Leadership: Steve Buchanan of Microsoft has driven tech community growth through mentorship, authorship, and advocacy for diversity.
  • Outstanding Technical Achievement: Shantanu Sarkar of Medtronic developed life-saving algorithms for cardiac health, impacting millions globally with groundbreaking advancements in atrial fibrillation and heart failure detection.
  • Rising Star: Kaileigh Hayden of Medtronic and Mariana Verdugo of Collins Aerospace were recognized for innovations in cardiac therapy and avionics sensor manufacturing, respectively, while mentoring and inspiring future STEM professionals.
  • Tech Educator of the Year: Rajeev Bukralia advanced data science education through program development and mentorship at Minnesota State University. Alexandra Holter expanded K-12 computer science access and forged key industry partnerships.
  • Public Service Excellence: Representative Steve Elkins authored the 2024 Minnesota Consumer Data Privacy Act, using IT expertise to shape impactful tech legislation.
  • Career Achievement: Archie Black transformed SPS Commerce into a leading SaaS company, driving growth and innovation before retiring in 2023.

Celebrating Minnesota’s Tech Leaders

The evening was more than just an awards ceremony, it was an opportunity to connect, inspire, and celebrate. Angela Davis, host of MPR News with Angela Davis, emceed the event, which included a celebratory toast led by leaders from presenting sponsors Optum and Target. Attendees enjoyed networking, camaraderie, and recognizing the accomplishments of peers across the tech industry.

Nate Lefebvre, VP of Manufacturing & Supply Chain at Concord, attended the event and stated that the Tekne Awards not only highlight achievements but also showcase the collaborative spirit driving Minnesota’s tech ecosystem.
