Overview

A leading financial software provider relied on a complex, spreadsheet-driven process to manage pricing across more than 30 desktop software SKUs.

The pricing team worked across multiple spreadsheets and a flat-file source of truth, navigating different pricing structures, add-on products, customer-specific agreements, and suppression rules. Many of the workflows supporting the process had never been formally documented and instead had to be understood through stakeholder knowledge.

The result was a complex, multi-step process that was difficult to trace and maintain. Changes and exceptions could be difficult to follow, while gaps in documentation made an already complicated pricing process harder to manage consistently.

Results

Because the existing workflows had not been formally documented, Concord first needed to understand how the pricing process worked before rebuilding it as an application. The team began with stakeholder interviews to uncover the workflows and decisions behind the existing process.

Claude helped accelerate that work. Concord used it to map previously undocumented workflows, organize decisions into clearer implementation phases, and develop working demos. Using insights from just four stakeholder interviews, the team was also able to derive the solution architecture.

Rather than relying on a traditional specification alone, Concord used working demos to give stakeholders something tangible to react to. The prototype reflected existing workflows, supported familiar inputs, highlighted pain points identified during stakeholder meetings, presented the process in an easy-to-follow linear flow, and used brand-consistent theming.

The demos helped the team achieve stakeholder buy-in in approximately 1.5 weeks. One stakeholder specifically noted that seeing the solution this way shortened the path forward.

Claude's role extended well beyond code generation. By using Claude as a development partner throughout flow mapping, phasing, architecture, and prototyping, Concord was able to accelerate the work required to understand the existing process and translate it into a solution the client could see and respond to.

With the approach validated, Concord began rebuilding the pricing process as a traceable application rather than simply putting a new interface over the existing spreadsheets. The new process centralizes pricing edits and logs exceptions with an owner and reason, providing greater visibility into how pricing decisions are made.

The new approach has already demonstrated significant improvements:

  • 60 minutes → 65 seconds: A pricing process that previously took approximately one hour was reduced to 65 seconds of processing time. The full round trip back to the application takes approximately three minutes due to latency.
  • 30+ desktop SKUs automated: The new process supports automation across more than 30 SKUs and allows the team to adjust which SKUs are included as products change from year to year.
  • ~1.5 weeks to stakeholder buy-in: Working demos helped shorten the path to stakeholder alignment and move the solution forward quickly.
  • Greater traceability: Pricing edits are centralized, while exceptions are logged with an owner and reason, creating a clearer record of changes and decisions.

Beyond the performance improvements, the modernization is replacing a complex spreadsheet-based process with a more structured and traceable application.

Just as importantly, the engagement demonstrates how Claude can improve the application development process itself. By helping Concord map undocumented workflows, define implementation phases, derive the architecture, and build working demos, Claude accelerated the path from discovery to a solution stakeholders could understand, validate, and move forward.
